Judging has been completed, potatoes have been weighed and the results are in.
The United Nations has named 2008 as the International Year of the Potato. To support the UN initiative, the Canterbury A&P Association held the inaugural Potato in a Bucket Competition.
The United Nations has recognised that potatoes have a major role to play in feeding the world’s population. Potatoes are a nutritional goldmine and can be grown in a variety of difficult conditions using minimal amounts of water.
The Potato in a Bucket Competition gave school students the opportunity to understand the importance of potatoes for themselves and also for both local and global communities.
Students were required to grow their own potato with the winner determined on the quality and weight of potatoes from a single plant.
Primary School Section 1st Hammersley Park, Room 7 – (rocket) potato weight 240 grams. 2nd Medbury School, Room 7FD – (swift) potato weight 200 grams. 3rd Hammersley Park, Room 5 – (swift) potato weight 195 grams.
Preschool Section 1st Kidsfirst Kindergarten, Broomfield – (red rascal) potato weight 280 grams. 2nd Kidsfirst Kindergarten, Richmond – (swift) potato weight 200 grams.
Winning entries in each section will be on display in the Garden NZ Pavilion at this year’s Royal New Zealand Show. Cash prizes and prize packs are awarded for first, second and third place.
Garden NZ is a new feature pavilion at the Royal New Zealand Show that will showcase Christchurch’s Garden City image with horticultural displays, exhibits, demonstrations, products and services.
The Royal New Zealand Show runs from 12-14 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park Christchurch. Attracting over 115,000 people, over 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and close to 600 trade exhibitors, plus three full days of entertainment, it is the premier agricultural and pastoral event in the country.
