New Zealand Gourmet Oil Competition
Gourmet oil results for 2010 competition
Results for this year’s New Zealand Gourmet Oil Competition have been announced with 10 Gold Medals, 4 Silver Medals and 11 Bronze Medals awarded.
The New Zealand Gourmet Oil Competition, now in its seventh year, was open to New Zealand produced Olive Oil including classes for Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Delicate, Medium and Intense plus classes for Walnut Oil, Hazelnut Oil and Avocado Oil.
Judges were impressed by the standard of entries, compared to previous years, commenting that New Zealand olive oil producers have learnt that big and vivacious, while very tempting to some is not what the majority of consumers want.
“The quality of the New Zealand olive oil was the best of I have seen anywhere in the world, it shows that we have matured as a serious olive oil producing country. For such a young industry we are leading by example, with great regional flavors and balance to give the consumer a product that they can afford to use every day" commented Judge Chris Fortune.
NZ MasterChef and Judge Brett McGregor, was very impressed with the entries. “Such a small sample of oil contained all the flavour of the sun and land in one little tasting, power to the olive oil producer in New Zealand” said McGregor.
The Best in Show Trophy was awarded to Cairnmuir Olives Extra Virgin Olive Oil, judged as the best oil from all Gold Medal winning entries.
Cairnmuir Olives is a small family owned business established in 1999 on a 4.4 hectare plot of land that was formerly part of the Cairnmuir high country sheep station. Nestled between the foothills of the Cairnmuir Mountains and the Kawarau Arm of Lake Dunstan in the Cromwell basin, Cairnmuir Olives mission is to produce the highest quality olive oil.
All medal winning oils will be on display at the Canterbury A&P Show in the Food & Wine NZ Pavilion.
The Canterbury A&P Show runs from 10-12 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park Christchurch. Attracting on average 110,000 people, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors, plus three full days of entertainment, it is the largest Agricultural and Pastoral Show in the country.
