Stud Ram & Ewe Fair

The Canterbury A&P Association’s Stud Ram & Ewe Fair, held Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 January 2012, produced a quality line up of 258 rams and 2 ewes. Sales were up 18 percent on last year with a total of $345,750 over the two days. The average sale price was $2,172 for rams and $225 for ewes.

The sale’s highest price went to a Southdown ram that sold for $8,500 by Chris J Medlicott of Waimate to JM & CA Jordan of Willowhaugh Enterprises, Blenheim. The sale was a half share with an Australian buyer with the semen likely to be exported.

Stock Agents commented that while prices were lower than in previous years, in that they didn’t break the five figure mark for any one ram, it represented excellent value for purchasers with top quality rams available at attractive prices. “Considering the current situation with regard to grass and schedule values, sales were disappointing, in both the prices realised and the clearance rate. This is reflective of the sheep industry in New Zealand with a considerable change in land use and the fall off in ewe numbers” commented PGG Wrightson NZ Livestock Genetics Manager Bruce Orr.

Entries for the 2013 Canterbury Stud Ram & Ewe Fair will open in October 2012.
