With so much going on at the Show, it’s so easy to stick to your favourites and miss out on trying something a little new. With a packed schedule of entertainment, competitions and activities, make sure you plan your day and take full advantage! The Show team have rounded up 30 Show favourites that you and your tribe can witness, cheer on or take part in during your time with us.
1. Hazletts Farmyard
The first (and middle and last) stop for many, is the Hazletts Farmyard. With visitors, big and small, able to get into the pens and pet the baby animals. The Hazletts Farmyard delivers you your dose of cuteness on a level like no other. Don’t miss the opportunity to ask our fantastic volunteers from NTA some questions about the animals, they are on hand to help all visitors learn something about these bundles of joy – alongside the cute cuddles of course.
2. Lolly Scramble
Need a sweet treat to boost your energy for a full day of Show activities? Head to the Main Arena for our lolly scramble and get your hands on some free candy!
3. Tractor Shuttle
Legs a little weary? Take a seat in our tractor shuttle and let us deliver you to your next Show stop. Grab a gate map and follow the pink line to find out where the tractor shuttle route runs.
4. He Tāngata Workshops
Head to the sign-in tent on the Tip Top Family Lawn and get your name down for workshops in Poi, Rakau, Haka, Rock Painting & Te Reo. Free to attend, these workshops will keep little ones entertained, offer them the chance to learn more on Maori culture and give them the change to sharpen up their Pukana. The He Tāngata team will also be taking to our stage to take you on a trip through Maori history.
5. Let There Be Meat BBQ Comp
This is one competition we can NOT wait to welcome to the Showgrounds for the first time in 2019. BBQ is BIG business and the teams will be smoking it out for 24 hours to try and take home top spot. Head along, ask the guys for some tips for your next home BBQ and even try a little yourself thanks to the guys and Smokin’ Que Crew.
6. Shetland Steeplechase
They may not have the stature of a racehorse, but they certainly have the heart! The Shetland Steeplechase is a firm favourite amongst the Show team, as these speedy Shetlands take on the Main arena in an adrenaline-fueled race. So, pick your winner, get to the Arena and get cheering them on.
7. Duck Herding & Mighty Mix dog Trials
Haven’t seen Duck Herding before…you need to! Longtime friend of the Show, Donald Stuart, puts on a herding display with a twist every lunchtime, providing a show of skill and a whole lot of laughter. Stick around as the competition heats up in the Mighty Mix Dog Trial Arena as experienced dog handlers guide their four-legged pals around obstacles and show why a dog really is man’s best friend.
8. Gumboot Throwing Championships
Could you be the next big thing in gumboot throwing?…It’s time to find out! Head to the gumboot throwing lane on Friday and test your skills (with some tips from the pros) and you could find yourself flying to the Gumboot National Championships in Palmerston North.
9. Sounds of the Village Green
Welcoming a wine village for 2019, and games to keep the kids occupied, take a seat in the sun and soak up sounds from the New Zealand Army Band, Brotherhood Musiq, Nat & Jono, The Eastern and Kings. Offering a little something for everyone, choose your musical vibe and head to the Green for festival feels in the middle of the Showgrounds.
10. Elgregoe the Magician
This is a magic show with a difference as Elgregoe and his feathered friends are set to bring awe and delight with their Amaze show. Stick around afterwards to meet the parrots up close and personal, along with the chance to learn a trick or two too.
11. Sports Suzie Show
Get up and get moving…or just take a seat and have a laugh as Suzie coordinates her way through an energetic show set to provide entertainment for all.
12. Zumba With Missy
This year, the Show welcomes a flash mob style performance and we urge you to get on your feet and join in. Missy and her team love nothing more than pulling Christchurch crowds up for a dance, let’s show them what the Show has got, eh?
13. Storytime with Bayleys
Tackling a tough topic with a light heart, Bayleys will lead story time with ‘Ace, A Horsey Tale Of Courage.’ This poignant tale looks into bullying in a relatable and light way, resonating with young and old. Take your little ones along for a stroy and a break from the hustle and bustle.
14. Annabel Coulter’s Baking Masterclass
Fresh off of her win from the Great Kiwi Bake Off, this Timaru teen has a bright future and will be on hand to show you how to whip up sweet treats that will impress at that next birthday party.
15. Woodchopping Arena
Trans-Tasman competitors will take to the Arena, to chop, saw and battle it out in a sport which unites audiences, rural and urban. Seats are hot property beside the Arena, so head along early and settle in to cheer on your team.
16. Mike Pero Endurocross
With a challenging course built completely by volunteers, some of the best in the biking game head to the Show as it is known as one of the trickiest competitions around. This adrenaline-fueled action is a Show highlight you certainly don’t want to miss.
17. Innovation Seminars
Championing our roots, the Show hosts seminars on the future of farming and how best our rural friends can navigate and ever-trickier farming landscape. These seminars are for everyone and it does not cost to join the conversation. Take a look at our timetable and head along if you can, we would love to hear what you have to say.
18. Canterbury’s Strongest Man and Woman
Witness freaky feats of strength as these competitors push their bodies and their minds to the limit. Joining us for the first time in 2018, the team is back bigger and better than ever for a Show day spectacular show of strength. The competition will be kicking off from 11am and running throughout the day.
19. Town & Country Bar
Bringing city slickness to the country, our Town & Country Bar had a refresh in 2018 making it the go-to spot for a glass of sangria or a cold one. This year, the bar is open to the whole family and offers a chilled space to rest your legs, catch some entertainment and grab a bite to eat if you wish.
20. Sheep Maternity Ward
There’s no more real induction to rural life than heading to our Sheep Maternity Ward. Witness a little lamb’s first steps and feel a true sense of just how amazing it is to have the chance to see such things in the heart of Christchurch.
21. Ballantynes Parade
Formidable Clydesdales, robust cattle and feisty alpacas take the Main Arena for a parade of all that is great about competing at the Show. Our Exhibitors put months of hard work into prep and this really is the pinnacle of showing at the Show. Head along and show your appreciation.
22. Getting Piggy With It
Matching uniforms, punny names and more fedoras that you could ever imagine run riot in our Pig Section on the Thursday of the Show. This section has become the dark horse of the sections and has a bit of a cult following. Head along for a showing experience you will NOT see anywhere else.
23. MoreFM Mini Golf, Heartland Hut & Lawn Games
Our MoreFM pals are back to keep you entertained on the Village Green with oversized games, mini-golf wars and a packet of chippies or two to help you bring your A game.
24. Ultimate Canines Dog Trick Show
Just a hop and a skip from our Mighty Mix Dog Trial Arena, we have a dog show with a difference. Chelsea is back to show off her impeccably trained pooches and ensure we all vow, yet again, to up our game with our own four-legged friends.
25. Tip Top X CookieTime
Tasty Kiwi titans Tip Top and CookieTime are joining forces to keep you fed, fueled and full of fun! From freakshakes to games it will all be going on on our Tip Top Family Lawn, so head along and get amongst the mix.
26. The Rock Chop Shop
Need a fresh trim? Why not get it at the Show? The Rock team are back with their Rock Chop Shop offering you a tidy up and a lamb chop while you wait. Why not?
27. PremierHire Demo Kitchen
From decadent dishes thanks to Andy from the Bicycle Thief to plant-based treats from the Two Raw Sisters, our Premier Hire Demo Kitchen will give you the tools to sharpen your cookery skills, no matter your preferred way of eating. We also have demos from the Brothers Green, Catherine Sissons, Mark McCracken and Jax Hamilton.
28. A Taste of Europe
Offering the chance to taste a little of Europe, right here in Christchurch, the European Union are on-site showcasing all that is delicious about our favourite holiday destinations. Whether cheese, wine or serrano ham is your go to holiday treat, head to their stand to try out the best Europe has to offer. you can also catch their showcase in our Premier Hire Demo Kitchen on Friday afternoon.
29. Heartland Bank Young Auctioneers Competition
Usually taking place on the Wednesday, our Heartland Bank YAC Comp will now take to the UBB Cattle Lawn Friday lunchtime, showcasing the excitement to a whole new audience. Watch as the next generation of auctioneers battle it out with the hope of winning a trip to the Royal Sydney Show.
30. NZ Cowboys Tear Up The Main Arena
Rodeo is growing in popularity in NZ with more and more youngsters taking up the sport. One of the most thrilling skills, to take part in and to watch, is that of barrel racing. Watch on as two top riders battle it out to be named champ. The NZ Rodeo Cowboys on the mic to ensure you know what’s going on and to amp up the excitement.
