Jim and his wife own and operate The Gates Country Lodge; a boutique luxury lodge situated in New Zealand’s South Island. Jim has judged at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Liquorland Top 100 Wine Show, Easter Show Wine Awards, San Francisco International Wine Competition, London Decanter World Wine Awards and the Japan International Wine Challenge. Jim is currently a Senior Judge with New Zealand Winegrowers, Chairman of Judges for the New World Wine Awards and a Wine Consultant for Air New Zealand.
Kate has been winemaking in New Zealand for 28 years, with consistent national and international trophy success with her wines throughout her winemaking career. In 1993 Kate became co-owner of Pask Winery and was appointed Managing Director in 1999. Kate has been a director of New Zealand Winegrowers since 1999, is Deputy Chair of The Wine Institute of New Zealand and a wine consultant to Air New Zealand. She is a senior wine judge and was the recipient of the Sir George Fistonich Medal in 2012 for services to New Zealand wine.
Paul’s family for generations has been closely associated with the wine industry, however his initial studies at Canterbury University were in Management and Psychology. He initially developed a small portfolio of wines to sell before embarking on several vintages and working in a wine store. Paul worked with CJ Pask, Foxes Island and Maude. During this period he has worked for a Uk distributor touring food shows. More recently Paul has been responsible for South Island wine sales for Ara Wines between 2012 and May of 2016. Since June of 2016 Paul has worked for Villa Maria Estate and is the South Island regional field sales manager for the company.
James has been senior winemaker at West Brook Winery in Auckland, for the past 13 years. James has been a senior wine judge at numerous New Zealand wine competitions including Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Gisborne Regional Wine Awards, the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards, the New Zealand International Wine Show and the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. James is also a senior New Zealand Cider judge. Over the years, James has chosen to share his passion and knowledge for wine with various New Zealand magazines and trade publications.
Petter has been involved in the New Zealand wine industry for more than 20 years. A graduate of Roseworthy College in 1984 he has worked for wineries in Germany and as a winemaker in Canterbury including St Helena, Waipara West and now with Sherwood Estate. Petter has judged previously for the Bragato Wine Awards and International Aromatic Wine Competition.
Jane Boyle has been involved in the New Zealand and Australian wine industries for over 30 years and is a highly sought after wine judge and consultant. With experience in all facets of the industry, Jane has judged at numerous international and national wine competitions, including the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, Bragato Wine Awards, New World Wine Awards and the New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition. She is also a regular judging panellist for Dish magazine.
Dr Rebecca Deed is a wine microbiology lecturer and researcher at the University of Auckland with a keen interest in the biology of yeast during fermentation, the development of new yeast strains for the wine industry, the formation of wine aroma compounds, and sensory science. These interests pair well with her aptitude and enthusiasm for wine judging and evaluation. Rebecca has achieved a Distinction pass in the WSET Intermediate and Advanced qualifications in Wines and Spirits and she has worked as a senior judge for the New World Wine Awards, Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, and Winestate Magazine.
