Gift Lamb Entry:

Mint Lamb is open to all farmers throughout the South Island and open to all breeds. Lambs are to be current new season lambs born after 1st July 2023. 

There is no entry fee to enter. If entering two or more lambs, you will be entitled an additional entry to the prize draw.

Gift Donation Entry:

If you do not have a lamb to enter, you can enter via a ‘gift donation’ of $100 incl GST, for one entry into the prize draw.

2023 Prize Draw:

  • The Prize Draw is a significant part of the Mint Lamb Competition. This year, The George Hotel has come onboard as our Anchor Sponsor and are providing us with $5,000 worth of accommodation and dining vouchers! The George is renowned for offering a luxury personalised stay, with their restaurant 50 Bistro offering a large choice of award winning cuisine.
  • Each prize winner will receive a package that includes vouchers to the George Hotel. The major prize this year will also include a trip for two to Queenstown to stay at the 5-star Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel for 2 nights in a Gondola Double Room, including breakfast. This is a Pattersons Commodore Hotel. There will also be opportunities to win Family Passes to the Christchurch Gondola and Tram from Christchurch Attractions, Family Passes to the International Antarctic Centre and miniature lemon trees from The Little Big Tree Co.
  • All entrants in attendance at the Prize Giving will receive a bottle of wine, compliments of the Caythorpe Family Estate – Bishell Family. All Prize Draw winners will receive another bottle of wine as part of their package.

Important Information:

  • Entries close Tuesday 14th November. There is no fee for those wanting to enter their lamb into the competition, with the lamb instead being gifted to the Association. Those who do not have a lamb to enter can opt for a $100 gift donation. All entries, both gift lambs and gift donations, go into the prize draw to win one of the many gifted prizes. 
  • Remember to send an ASD form (animal status declaration) including the eartag number for each lamb when they are sent to the Canterbury Saleyards.
  • Lambs will be transported to the Canterbury Saleyards by no later than 4pm on Monday 20th November 2023 where they will be weighed before being transferred to South Pacific Meats, Malvern. Your Area Coordinator will contact you before this date with delivery/collection instructions.

2023 Timelines:

  • Mon 25th Sept - Entries open
  • Tues 14th Nov - Entries close
  • Mon 20th Nov - 4pm lambs delivered to Canterbury Saleyards.
  • Fri 1st Dec - Taste test & prize giving ceremony

Weight Based Classes:

  • Class 1 15.0 - 20.6 kgs
  • Class 2 20.7 - 27.9 kgs
  • Class 3 15.0 - 27.9 kgs - Ram breeders

Any person/property who sells Rams registered or unregistered enters in Class 3. The winner of Class 3 is eligible for all prizes but not eligible to win the overall Mint Lamb Trophy.

The objective of the Mint Lamb Competition is to promote the quality and variety of lamb available in the South Island, leading to increased consumption while providing an opportunity for individual farmers to be recognised for the superior product they produce.
