Christchurch Boys’ High School took out top honours in the in the inaugural Canterbury Clash of the Colleges at the NZ Agricultural Show in Christchurch today.

Christchurch Boys’ High School took out top honours in the in the inaugural Canterbury Clash of the Colleges at the NZ Agricultural Show in Christchurch today.

The competition aims to increase the rural skills of the next generation and was developed by Steve Hollander, founder of the NZ Rural Games Trust.

Thirty two secondary school teams vied for bragging rights with Rangi Ruru Girls’ School
placed second and Geraldine High School coming in third.

Teams from Cheviot to Geraldine competed in 15 modules from identifying animal anatomy, condition scoring of sheep, wool classing, identifying seeds & weeds, applying drench, tying knots, safety, aspects of fencing, putting together a shearing hand-piece and more.

The Clash also has a rural sports focus, with modules that include gumboot throwing, egg throw and catch, and wool fadge races. Associate Minister of Agriculture Meka Whaitiri and National’s acting agriculture spokesperson Todd Muller awarded the prizes.
